Hello all you Mirrors !

We are another subset of twins more unique and different than the non mirrors. I/We (Barry and Gary Murphy) never met mirrors until we went to the 2004 Twinsburg festival last week. What a great surprise!
We began asking the TWIN birth order of all mirrors we met (10 sets - 4 female, 6 male) and found out that every left handed twin of the mirrors was born first, including me(Gary), I have been unable to find statistics of the number of left handed twins born first vs. right.

There are many hypothesis about the cause of mirrors including a statement that blames lack of oxygen and brain damage to the second birth as the cause for left handedness. We could not find a left handed mirror twin that was born second, so that theory goes out the window for out small research group.

Of the 50 + twins we questioned during the festival about handedness, we found no set of twins that were both left handed. All twins we questioned were both right handed or mirror.

Hope to see more data on mirrors soon.

Gary and Barry Murphy

Gary, I find the left handed first twin thing fascinating! My boys are also mirror. Xander was 1st born and is left handed, Noah 2nd and right. I've also checked with another Mum of mirrors and they are the same, ie 1st is left handed. Two more examples for your sample set! and we are on the other side of the world!

Okay, I am a mirror twin. My sister is left-handed and I am right handed. But, here's the thing. I am the older one. My sister always jokes she "should" have been older becuase we were born Ceasarian(sp?). So I don't know if this blows your thoery or not. (she even acts like the "big sister" all the time)

Hi,
I've only just found this site, it is great. I am lucky enough to be mum to i.d girls now two & a half yrs old!! My first born is showing clear signs of being left handed and the second right handed. So this supports your theory but I wonder if there are other things I should look for to see if they are mirror twins.

Hello All,

Interesting theory, but I'm afraid we're an exception - I'm the left handed-one and I was born second. And we were not a caesarean (they don't count, IMHO). But then again, how do I know if we count as mirror twins? Is it just a case of handedness? We could be a left/right pair just by chance.

cheers
Rick (in the UK)

I'm a mirror twin and the left handed one. My twin was born 2 mins before I was. I like to think that I kicked her out and had a private moment with Mom before I had to come into the world. We were tested for mirror image in an unusual way. Military doctors do not have a concept of mirror image. They tend to think everyone's appendix is on the right. I had pain and they did an ultra sound looking for the appendix, couldnt find it and called 5 technicians in to try to find it. My twin was standing right there with me telling them that we're mirror twins. They wrote us off for another 3 hours and finally decided to check the other side and found the appendix in under 5 minutes. We still give the doctor crap about that and he even admits there is some truth to mirror twins.
